Africa-Press – Mauritius. The former Government Chief Whip, Ms Naveena Ramyad, has been appointed to the Office of Minister and assigned the portfolio of the Ministry of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives by the Acting President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Marie Cyril Eddy Boissézon, in the exercise of the powers vested in him under sections 59(3) and 62 of the Constitution, and acting in accordance with the Prime Minister.

The Swearing-In Ceremony of the newly appointed Minister was held, this morning, at the State House in Réduit, in the presence of the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister for Rodrigues, Outer Islands and Territorial Integrity, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, and other Cabinet Members.

In a statement, the Prime Minister underlined Government’s commitment to promote women participation in high-level positions, as well as in politics and in Government. He thus welcomed the appointment of Ms Ramyad as Minister, in addition to the four existing women Ministers.

For her part, the newly appointed Minister thanked the Prime Minister for trusting her with more responsibilities, and affirmed that she would work hard to meet the expectations of the population.

Regarding her Ministerial portfolio, Mrs Ramyad deemed entrepreneurship as a dynamic sector, accounting for about 40% of Gross Domestic Product and 50% of direct and indirect employment.

“My efforts,” she stated, “would be geared towards increasing the visibility of the Ministry of Industrial Development, SMEs and Cooperatives to publicise more effectively the services and facilities provided to relevant stakeholders. She recalled that the Government had implemented a series of incentives to stimulate the growth of SMEs.

The Minister thus would undertake to focus on boosting the sector by drawing on her experience as a former entrepreneur, and through the dissemination of the relevant information concerning the way one could transform an idea into a business venture, and the reduction of any administrative burdens.

It is noted that, since 11 February 2024, the responsibilities for the portfolio of the Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security have been assigned to Mr Mahen Kumar Seeruttun, while Mr Soomilduth Bholah holds the portfolio of the Ministry of Financial Services and Good Governance.
