MSM Leader Highlights Drug Battle Failures and Crises

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The leader of the Mouvement Socialiste Mauricien (MSM), Pravind Jugnauth, reacted to recent events following a wreath-laying ceremony at the Aapravasi Ghat, organized in tribute to the engaged workers. When questioned by the press, he said he did not wish to comment at this time on the situation concerning the Acting Director of the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC), preferring to “see how things develop” before expressing an opinion.

He then addressed the arrival in Mauritius of the Malagasy businessman, Mamy Ravatomanga, commenting on the statement by the Deputy Prime Minister, Paul Bérenger, who said he had not been consulted about the landing of the latter’s private jet. “Either Paul Bérenger is lying, or the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mrs. Fong Weng, made the decision alone. If so, she must take responsibility. She must resign,” he said.

The MSM leader also dwelled on what he calls the “deterioration” of the situation in the country. “Things have become so clear today. When a minister says that the fight against drugs is already lost, it is serious. The number 3 in the government declares that we have lost this battle, while the same government created an institution with so-called experts to fight against drugs. It has existed for a year, but instead of a celebration, it is a year of mourning for the country,” he lamented. Regarding the issue of the Reward Money, Pravind Jugnauth specified that “this decision falls to the police” and not to him.

When asked about the situation of Air Mauritius, he said there is “a clear effort to sell off Air Mauritius. We saved the company after two years of crisis linked to Covid-19, while it had been placed under voluntary administration. Today, the same people are trying to sell it off again.”

On the political front, he assured that his party continues to consolidate. Finally, speaking about the Bank of Mauritius, he expressed concerns about recent departures within the institution: “We have never heard of a scandal involving the Bank of Mauritius before.” However, he noted that the Deputy Governor and the Governor had to resign, and the Governor’s son was implicated. “Why hasn’t he been summoned to provide explanations, especially after saying that the MIC is in our hands? This kind of arrogance undermines our institutions,” he pointed out.

Pravind Jugnauth concluded by denouncing what he describes as political control over institutions: “Ministers interfere in everything. This is where we are today: the country is demoralized.”
