Africa-Press – Mauritius. A total of 181 students of families eligible under the Social Register of Mauritius (SRM) received their tablets yesterday in Port-Louis. The main objective is for the students to be equipped with their tablets before the opening of schools, scheduled for Wednesday 02 February, 2022.
The Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, the Chairperson of the National Empowerment Foundation (NEF) Dr. Raffick Sorefan and other personalities were present on the occasion.
The event is an initiative of the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National and the Solidarity and the NEF to ensure the continuous learning of students and also to provide them with the necessary support for their schooling.
In her address, Minister Jeewa-Daureeawoo lauded the engagement of the NEF to help students registered under the SRM develop technology and communication skills, by equipping them with necessary tools so as to sustain any virtual learning environment and facilitating access to various types of e-learning resources.
She recalled that the initiative to distribute tablets aims to ensure the continuous learning of students at home was undertaken during the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020 while adding that a total of 644 students under the SRM have already received their tablets last year.
Access to technology, she highlighted, gives students greater opportunities to learn, engage, communicate, and develop skills that will prepare them for work, life, and citizenship.
The provision of a tablet to these students will be of immense help to them by allowing them to follow online classes and get access to materials as well as enhancing their academic performances, she said.
