New centenarian, Mrs Marie Gracia Catherine, celebrates her birthday in Mare La Chaux

Africa-Press – Mauritius. Mrs Marie Gracia Catherine, born on 05 October 1922, celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday 11 October 2022, at Multipurpose Complex in Mare La Chaux. An official ceremony was organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity to honour the new centenarian.

Mrs Catherine received, from the authorities, a cheque amounting to Rs 26 203; a centenarian medal; a mini oven; a gift from Senior Citizens Council; and a cheque to the tune of Rs 10 000 from the National Solidarity Fund.

The President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun; the Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, Mr Darsanand Balgobin; the Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, Mr Sudheer Maudhoo, and other eminent personalities were present on the occasion.

Mrs Catherine was born to a labourer, Mr CorneT Jean Dorlis and his spouse, Mrs Thomas Marie Elea who was a housewife. The centenarian never attended school.

She was civilly married to Mr Catherine Louis Ivanoe on 01 July 1944. The latter worked as labourer at FUEL Sugar Estate. Out of this union, nine children were born, four sons and five daughters.

Presently, she has three sons and three daughters, 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren. She likes to spend her time in prayer and listening to the radio.

Her favourite food is chicken soup. She attributes her long life to her faith in God. Mrs Catherine enjoys good health but is blind. She is cared by her daughter Mrs Simon Marie Florence.
