Africa-Press – Mauritius. The members of the African Union Commission elected in February of this year, will take office on Thursday at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in a ceremony led by the chairman of the continental organization, João Lourenço.
The AU leader, who is also the Angolan Head of State, is in the Ethiopian capital since Wednesday afternoon, where he was received at Bole International Airport by his counterpart Taye Atske-Selassie Amde, who will also be present at the ceremony, as well as the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali.
The event will take place at Nelson Mandela Hall, at the AU headquarters, and the first to receive the portfolios from the outgoing president of the commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, will be Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, followed by the vice-chair of the body, Selma Malika Haddadi, both elected during the 38th Summit of the organization’s Heads of State and Government, held in the Ethiopian capital.
The act also includes the swearing-in of the Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment, Moses Vilakati from Eswatini, the Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, Lerato D. Mataboge (South Africa), the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye (Nigeria) and the Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Amma A.Twum-Amoah (Ghana).
Due to the lack of requirements from candidates during the summit held last month, the Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals and the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation were not elected, which is scheduled to happen in April this year.
Applications for these two positions must be restricted to male and female candidates from the central region of the continent, in accordance with the provisions of the committee’s statute and the conference’s internal rules.
However, as head of the African Union, President João Lourenço, program includes for Friday a visit to the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), an entity created on the initiative of the AU to strengthen health security on the continent, responding to pandemics and the development of public health skills.
In his capacity as the Head of the Republic of Angola, the official programme also includes a working meeting with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed Ali.
The meeting will serve to strengthen relations between Angola and Ethiopia.
When he took over the rotating leadership of the African Union during the 38th Summit of the Organization’s Heads of State and Government, the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, stated that he would pay close attention to Africa’s main problems and would put his experience in seeking solutions to issues of peace and security at the service of the organization.
He also said that he would pay attention to the implementation by member states of economic and social policies that promote the continent’s progress and development.
