Africa-Press – Mauritius. The swearing-in ceremony of the new Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), Mr Ahmad Jeewah, was held, today, at the State House, Réduit, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun.
In a statement, Mr Jeewah expressed his thanks to the Prime Minister and the President for having placed trust and confidence in him to occupy the post of Chairperson the EOC.
He also gave the assurance that he will fully assume his responsibilities in all fairness, and paid tribute to his predecessor for the good work carried out so far.
It is recalled that the EOC is an independent statutory body set up under the Equal Opportunities Act 2008.
The Commission’s role is to investigate discrimination complaints, hear the parties and attempt to conciliate them, when appropriate; work to prevent discrimination from occurring by informing people about their rights and responsibilities under the Equal Opportunities Act through sensitisation campaigns as well as through preparation of appropriate codes and guidelines; and keep under review the working of the Equal Opportunities Act and submit to the Attorney-General proposals for amending them, if required.
