Africa-Press – Mauritius. The newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the European Union (EU) to Mauritius, Mr Oskar Benedikt, presented his letters of credence to the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, this afternoon, at the State House, in Réduit.
In a statement following the meeting, the Ambassador highlighted that it has been a great honour and privilege to meet the President. The EU, he indicated, has been a strong partner of Mauritius for many years and intends to continue on this path for the years to come.
Furthermore, Mr Benedikt underlined that Mauritius and the EU have many things in common, including the respect of law, democracy, stability and strength.
“Other aspects of cooperation will be continued to be developed for the welfare of the people,” he added.
Ambassador Benedikt stressed that he looks forward to working with all relevant institutions and the Government in order to enhance our common cooperation and agenda.
Moreover, he dwelt on some areas of priorities of the EU discussed with the President, namely: international laws, bilateralism, supporting democracy around the world, and dialogue through multinational institutions.
Discussions, the Ambassador shared, also focused on the economic development of Mauritius, notably how to make it become a financial hub. “We also spoke about the fisheries sector and as how Mauritius is an example around the African continent in terms of its democracy, peace and stability,” he pointed out.
Mr Benedikt is the Head of Division of the European External Action Service (EEAS) since September 2020 up to now. Prior to this, he was the Advisor to the Human Resource Director of the EEAS from April 2019 to August 2020.
The Ambassador has also been Advisor to the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Furthermore, during his tenure, he has worked as Deputy Head of EU delegation to Serbia from 2013 to 2017.
