Africa-Press – Mauritius. The newly appointed High Commissioner of the Republic of Ghana to Mauritius, Mr Charles Asuako Owiredu, presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, this afternoon, at the State House, in Réduit.
Mr Owiredu is a non-resident High Commissioner to Mauritius and is based in Pretoria, South Africa. In a statement following the meeting, Mr Owiredu highlighted that this was his first visit to Mauritius and that discussions focussed on several topics at bilateral and multilateral levels.
He recalled that some agreements had already been signed between Mauritius and Ghana, namely on the avoidance of double taxation and regarding air services.
“Our Central Banks,” he stated, “have also signed a memorandum of understanding so as to deepen the financial ties between our two countries.
Furthermore, High Commissioner Owiredu underlined that Ghana was one of the first countries to fully support Mauritius as far as the Chagos Archipelago issue was concerned, and reassured that his country would continue to stand by Mauritius for the complete decolonisation of the Archipelago.
He also seized the opportunity to commend Mauritius’ support to Ghana when the latter wanted to host the Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat and to be part of the United Nations (UN) Security Council as a non-permanent member.
The Ghanaian High Commissioner also informed that two priority areas for Ghana as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council would be security on the African continent and climate change.
Mr Owiredu added that, during his tenure as High Commissioner for our Republic and with the support of the media, he would work towards strengthening the Mauritius-Ghana bilateral relations.
It is recalled that Mr Owiredu, who holds a Master of Arts in Conflict, Peace and Security Studies, has been the Director of International Affairs, New Patriotic Party HQ, from September 2008 to March 2017.
He also served as Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration from April 2017 to January 2021. He has been appointed Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa since June 2021.
