Newly renovated Nelson Mandela Municipal Football Ground reopens in Résidence Vallijee

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The newly renovated Nelson Mandela football ground re-opened, yesterday, in Résidence Vallijee. On the same occasion, an ancient pre-primary Government School, converted into sports and music rooms, was inaugurated and “ravannes” were distributed to the youths present.

The Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), Mrs Marie Christiane Dorine Chukowry; the Lord Mayor of the Municipal City Council of Port Louis, Mr Mahfooz Moussa Cader Saib; as well as other personalities were present.

In a statement, Mrs Chukowry highlighted that the inauguration of this newly renovated football ground bears testimony that Government gives thorough consideration to local and regional projects and has at heart the quality of life of all citizens, irrespective of the regional area.

She underlined that the Government in collaboration with the Municipal Council left no stone unturned to invest in infrastructural projects so as to bring development in the region.

Furthermore, the PPS encouraged the inhabitants of the region, in particular the youth, to take advantage of the facilities at their disposal to practice a physical activity and sports on a daily basis adding that this will help in combating the drug scourge in Mauritius.

For his part, Mr Cadersaib indicated that the football ground is one of a series of projects that are on Government’s agenda which is geared towards enhancing the quality of life of the population. He expressed satisfaction as regards the renovation works, to the tune of some Rs 1.2 million, carried out on the football ground.

They include: changing rooms; proper lightings so that football players can train till late; turfing of the football ground to prevent dust from spreading to nearby inhabitants’ houses; and an undergoing irrigation system.

The Lord Mayor further dwelt on some projects that are in the pipeline for the region of Port Louis, namely: asphalting of streets in the region of Port Louis; an endemic garden at Les Salines, where tags will be placed on the endemic trees to enable the public to scan and obtain information about the trees; renovation of the football ground of La Tour Koenig; the construction of a MUGA which is a community-based Fun and Fitness Movement Centre; a funeral parlour in La Tour Koenig; and a synthetic football ground in Pointe aux Sables.

The Nelson Mandela Municipal football ground The renovation of the Nelson Mandela Municipal football ground started in December 2021 and was completed end of March 2022. The contract for renovation was awarded to Nature Sculpt Ltd.
