Africa-Press – Mauritius. One cent coins, with the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was distributed, this morning from 10h00 to 11h30, on board Metro Express Ltd’s (MEL) Light Rail Vehicles, on a first come first served basis, to passengers at the Port Louis Victoria station.
This special symbolic event was organised in the context of the Queen’s State funeral which is being held today. This initiative is a joint collaboration of MEL and the owner of the ‘Musée de la Petite Collection’ in Rose Belle, Mr Goorooduth Chuttoo.
The event was held in the presence of the Chief Executive Officer of MEL, Dr Das Mootanah; Mr G. Chuttoo; and the MEL team. In a statement, Dr Mootanah said that the event is an opportunity to commemorate the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, which, he recalled, is an international event attended by world leaders and foreign royals.
He recalled that MEL gives a lot of importance to social activities, culture and heritage and hence its collaboration with Mr Chuttoo to distribute the one cent coins bearing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
He further said that the distribution of the coins to Metro Express passengers is symbolical since this mode of transport is present in all Commonwealth countries.
He also spoke about the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in Mauritius in 1972. It is to be recalled that the State funeral of Queen Elizabeth II is taking place today at Westminster Abbey in London.
Foreign royals and world leaders have joined the Queen’s family for a service that will be watched by hundreds of millions globally. Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, died on 08 September 2022 at Balmoral at the age of 96, after reigning for 70 years.
