Africa-PressMauritius. A one-day COVID-19 vaccination session kick-started, this morning, at the Baitka of Union Park for the inhabitants of Union Park and those living in the vicinity. It is organised at the initiative of the Ministry of Health and Wellness in collaboration with the Union Park Welfare Association and the Union Park Hindu Samelan Sabha.
The vaccination session is being run from 09:00 hours till 15:00 hours today with the Johnson & Johnson Vaccine (Janssen Vaccine) (single dose) to be inoculated to all Mauritian citizens aged 18 years and above.
As at 11:00 am, around 100 persons were already vaccinated, and the target is to reach some 300 persons for the day. The session is in line with the Government’s efforts towards vaccinating the majority of the population before the next phase for the reopening of borders scheduled for October 2021.
The vaccination session is being held in the presence of the Officers of the Ministry of Health and Wellness as well as the president and the secretary of the Union Park Welfare Association, namely Mr Fadeer Sooklall and Mr Randhir Mannick respectively. Mr Lall Beejadhur, president of the Union Park Hindu Samelan Sabha and Mr Jaideo Fowdur, vice-president were also present.
In a statement, the secretary of the Union Park Welfare Association, Mr Mannick, expressed his satisfaction as to the vaccination session which is being carried out in an organised manner in line with the set sanitary protocols to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 among the population. He further encouraged more Mauritians in the locality to come forward for the vaccination session. The vaccine, he emphasised, will help protect both the person and his entire family from the COVID-19. Mr Mannick, also stated that a second vaccination session is scheduled on 25th August 2021 given the response with today’s vaccination session.
It will be recalled that at mid-August 2021, a total of 753 260 persons, representing 60% of the population in the Republic of Mauritius, has been inoculated with a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. A total of 618 018 persons, that is 48% of the population, have received both doses of vaccines against the COVID-19.
