Open Days mark International Day for Monuments and Sites 2022

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The National Heritage Fund under the aegis of the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage, organised open days on Saturday 07 May 2022 and Sunday 08 May 2022, to mark the International Day for Monuments and Sites and the African World Heritage Day.

The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr Avinash Teeluck, was present at the Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Site, in Port-Louis, on that occasion.

The aim of the International Day for Monuments and Sites is to encourage local communities and individuals throughout the world to understand the importance of cultural heritage in relation to their lives, identities and communities.

It also aims at fostering awareness of the diversity and vulnerability of cultural heritages and the efforts required to protect and conserve these heritages.

In his address, Minister Teeluck underlined that the International Day for Monuments and Sites offers an opportunity to the Government to showcase some of the Heritage Sites and Buildings that have been reconverted, such as the Government House and the State House, and to allow the public to visit these sites so as to understand part of their history and the current purpose of these buildings.

He highlighted that it is an occasion to contextualise our own journey as a population and to reflect on the importance of cultural heritages in Mauritius and the impact that these heritages have on the lives of citizens.

The International Day additionally presents an opportunity to raise awareness on diversity and draw attention on vulnerability as well as educate people on the numerous social and economic changes that have occurred over the generations, added the Minister. At national level, several Heritage Sites were accessible to the public free of charge.

These included: the Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Site, Port-Louis; Le Morne Cultural Landscape and International Slave Route Monument, Le Morne; Replica of Trou Chenille Village, Le Morne; State House, Réduit; Government House, Port-Louis; Château Riche en Eau, Riche en Eau; National History Museum, Mahebourg; Robert Edward Hart Memorial Museum, Souillac; Frederik Hendrik Museum, Vieux Grand-Port; SSR Memorial Centre for Culture, Port-Louis; La Citadelle, Port-Louis; Bras d’eau National Park; SSR Botanical Garden, Pamplemousses; Postal Museum, Port-Louis; Château Labourdonnais, Mapou; La Tour Koenig; and, Sookdeo Bissoondoyal Museum, Tyack.
