The African Union reiterates its commitment to education as an inalienable human right and a public good, committing to ensuring inclusive, equitable and quality education, as well as lifelong learning opportunities for all.The information is contained in a joint statement by the African Union Commission and UNESCO, in collaboration with continental and international partners.
In the statement, the African organization states that governments and states have a solemn duty to respect, protect and enforce the right to education, emphasizing the fundamental role of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, innovation, research and employment in achieving the ambitious goals outlined in the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) 2026-2035, the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA) 2034, the Continental Strategy on Artificial Intelligence, a UNESCO Priority for Africa and the Sustainable Development Goals, all aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
The commitment, the document reads, echoes the “Compact for the Future”, underlining the power of science, technology and innovation to overcome barriers, promote sustainability and ensure a future where no one is left behind.
STEM, the note underlines, is a powerful enabler and driver of progress in addressing critical challenges such as poverty, climate change, food security, access to health and sustainable development across Africa.The African Union also states that it can boost economic growth through innovation-driven industries, research and development (R&D), entrepreneurship and job creation, as well as creating a generation of responsible citizens who will use STEM ethically.
“We call on all stakeholders to collaborate and harness the transformative power of STEM to achieve the aspirations of the AU Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals,” the document also reads.
