Africa-Press – Mauritius. A total of 113 top achievers of the 15th edition of the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards, received their certificates and prizes, in presence of the Vice-Prime Minister (VPM), Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, during an official ceremony organised by the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES), today, at the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex.

The Head of the Ministry Portfolio, Qualifications Development from Cambridge Assessment International Education, Mrs Hazel Carmichael; the Chairperson of the MES and Secretary for Home Affairs at the Prime Minister’s office, Mr Ravi Meettook; and the Director of the MES, Mrs Brenda Thanacoody Soborun, were present on the occasion.

The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards aims at valorising the achievement of Mauritian students who have excelled in the 2022 Cambridge O, A and AS level.

Students who are presented with the Cambridge Top in the World and the Cambridge Top in Mauritius awards are those who have scored the highest mark in the world and in Mauritius at O, A and AS levels in any subject.

As for the High achievement Award, it is conferred to students who have obtained outstanding results in subjects with low candidature. In her address, VPM Dookun-Luchoomun, congratulated the students who have demarcated themselves with distinction in the 2022 examinations.

The fact that a total of 124 awards including 24 for the Top in World category are being presented to Mauritian students is a concrete evidence of the success of the education system in the country, she stated.

This, she said, demonstrates that Mauritian students were successfully able to compete with candidates worldwide and achieve excellent results. According to the VPM, the remarkable performance of the students also indicates that there is a clean and sound competition in the education system in Mauritius.

“It is important to continue to benchmark our education system and set standards against prevailing international norms and high performing countries in education”, she stressed. VPM Dookun-Luchoomun observed that Government allocates a huge budget of around Rs 20 billion for education.

Government, she emphasised, is of the belief that education is a basic human right that has the potential to transform society and take center stage in economic and social transformation.

The reforms that we have brought aim at further consolidating our education system and foster the principles of efforts and hard work to succeed, she added.

Moreover, she called on the students to continue to upscale themselves by learning new values and the ability to live in harmony as well as to contribute in driving change and innovation, social impact and economic progress.

Mrs Carmichael, for her part, commended the MES for their hard work and continued collaboration in the field of education. She observed that the students have been able to give their best potential in the examinations and earn brilliant results due to the enthusiastic support of teachers and encouragement of their families.

She advised the students to pursue their higher studies in such a way that will equip them with lifelong skills and abilities to obtain their desired career. As for Mr Meettook, he underlined that the Awards is a momentous occasion to celebrate the outstanding performances of the 2022 cohort.

“It is a proud moment for Mauritius to have 24 students ranked top in the world”, he said, “The country will now be known for its unwavering commitment to education”.

He urged the students to continue to develop their intellectual capacity in the pursuit of excellence adding that there are endless opportunities that await them.

Mrs Thanacoody Soborun remarked that the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards have been a regular feature in the calendar of activities since 2007. The awards, she said, is an occasion to celebrate the hard work of the students and the wider school community.

She indicated that awards are being given to some 40 secondary schools in various subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Literature in English Literature, Hinduism, Oriental languages and Travel and tourism. The achievement also demonstrates the longstanding collaboration of the MES with the Cambridge Assessment International Education, she added.
