Parliament: the bill on waste management voted with amendments

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Waste Management and Resource Recovery Bill was voted on Tuesday evening, with amendments. During his summing-up, the Minister of the Environment, Kavy Ramano, stressed that this bill is important for the population to have a clean, green and less polluting environment.

On the other hand, it can be considered as a stepping stone towards the establishment of a circular economy in the solid waste sector in Mauritius. “It will foster and strengthen the recycling industry in Mauritius which is still in its infancy.

Greater capacity to recycle, reuse or refurbish waste will provide a stronger foundation for the expanding recycling and resource management industry. As a result, the creation of green jobs for recycling, sorting and collecting materials will increase. ”

In addition, Minister Ramano stressed that with the new law, local authorities will be called upon to play a crucial role in circularity and the integrated approach to waste.

An in-depth awareness campaign will be conducted to sensitize the population to sorting waste at source. But anyone who breaks the law on a first conviction would be liable to a fine not exceeding Rs 100,000 and imprisonment not exceeding two years. In case of recidivism, he would be liable to a maximum fine of Rs 200,000 and a prison term not exceeding eight years.

In this same context, the Minister of Energy and Utilities, Joe Lesjongard, welcomed and fully supported the bill and stated that the objective is to divert, by 2030, approximately 70% of the waste generated by landfills via an ecological transition.

“Floods, droughts, erosion, among others, we are the most vulnerable to climate change.
Without the support and contribution of the population and young people to waste sorting and recycling projects, the circular economy will not remain. than a project. Protecting our environment remains our priority. We have a clear vision of a cleaner, greener and safer Mauritius.”
