Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Hon. Alan Ganoo, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Régional Integration and International Trade participated, in his capacity as Coordinator at the WTO for African Ministers of Trade, in the opening of the Retreat organiséd by the African Union in Geneva on 12 November.
Other participants included the Director Général of teh WTO, Dr Ngozi Okonjo- Ikeawala; HE Mr Dacio Castillo, Chair of the General Council of the WTO and Dr Albert Muchanga, the African Union Commissioner for Trade.
In his opening statement, the Minister laid emphasis on the need to find a balanced outcome at MC 12, one that addresses the concerns of developing countries and consolidates the development and sustainability objectives at the WTO and boosts efforts across the globe for economic recovery.
He recalled the need to ensure that the TRIPS Waiver request be soon resolved as it would be an essential part of the WTO’s response to the Pandemic. Dr Ngozi spoke lengthily about vaccines and other issues under negotiations. The Chair of the General Council also have an update on issues currently under discussion.
