Africa-Press – Mauritius. Sooroojdev Phokeer has been ordered out, one might be tempted to say. The National Assembly press release issued shortly after 6pm on Tuesday stated that Sooroojdev Phokeer had submitted his resignation. “According to an announcement by the Mauritius National Assembly , the Honourable Sooroojdev Phokeer, GCSK, GOSK, has by letter, dated this Tuesday 16 July 2024, tendered his resignation as Speaker of the National Assembly due to health issues ,” the press release read. A few minutes earlier, the Express had heard that Sooroojdev Phokeer had been dismissed from his duties.
We called him to confirm the news. “Oh really? Who said I had resigned. I’ll call you in five minutes?” he replied, with a certain astonishment in his voice, before bursting into laughter. A few moments later, he denied having resigned during a radio interview. “Who would have told me to leave my job? I, I can’t tell you or I can’t work, my health doesn’t allow me. My first job, my second job… If I do a third job, I can’t work,” he said. He denied his resignation when L’Express called him back at 7:14 p.m. “Who would have told me to leave my job?” “If you didn’t win anything like Parlman, check with Parlman mem ,” he replied.
There is every reason to believe that the Prime Minister’s visit to the Cardiac Unit at Victoria Hospital, Candos, on Tuesday, where he spent almost an hour, was aimed at convincing Sooroojdev Phokeer to resign. Otherwise, why would a doctor allow a visitor to spend so much time with a patient who had undergone heart surgery?
Incidentally, The Express had asked Sooroojdev Phokeer earlier on Tuesday morning if he was planning to resign. “I don’t know what will happen. I am unwell. I am thinking about my health. Everything will depend on the Prime Minister ,” he had said.
