Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Pierrefonds–Cascavelle Link road, designed to improve road connectivity in the western region, was inaugurated yesterday by the Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness. The project forms part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the national road network and promote infrastructural development across Mauritius. The Pierrefonds–Cascavelle Link road is operational as of today.
The Junior Minister of Arts and Culture, Mrs Marie Veronique Leu-Govind; Members of Parliament, and other stakeholders were also present.
In his address, Minister Gunness highlighted the public–private partnership has been instrumental to the implementation of the project. He also commended the contractors for completing the works within the scheduled timeframe. The Minister said he was conscious of the traffic congestion experienced in the vicinity of Cascavelle Mall during the construction phase and expressed his appreciation to motorists for their patience and cooperation.
The Minister urged road users to exercise caution and refrain from speeding, while recalling that the penalty points system will come into effect as from January 2026. The police will take the necessary measures to discourage speeding and reckless driving along the new route, he said.
The link road connects La Vigie to Cascavelle and will later be extended to Flic-en-Flac, with overall completion scheduled by June next year, he mentioned. Additional road works are underway near Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa and Tamarina Golf & Spa Boutique Hotel to ease traffic congestion in the area.
Minister Gunness further outlined forthcoming road infrastructure projects, namely the development of the M4 Motorway with financial assistance from the Government of India, at an estimated cost of Rs 10.8 billion. Phases 1 and 2 will run from Forbach to Bel Air, providing a strategic link between the north and the east, with a planned extension to connect the south of the country. He also referred to the upcoming Ring Road project, to which Melrose and Dubreuil will be connected.
Other initiatives include the installation of solar-powered lighting on new roads, with plans to gradually replace conventional street lighting nationwide.
