Africa-Press – Mauritius. A policy dialogue meeting in view of the preparation of the 2022-2023 Budget was held, this afternoon in Port Louis, between the Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, Mr Sudheer Maudhoo, and the Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr Renganaden Padayachy.
During the policy dialogue, which focused on the blue economy as well as fisheries, Minister Maudhoo shared his views and proposals with Dr Padayachy on the way forward with regards to the allocation of funds for the implementation of projects with the aim of promoting development in these sectors.
In a statement following the meeting, Minister Maudhoo highlighted that it was proposed to allocate funds for providing registration cards to some additional 800 fishermen and to enable them to benefit from adequate support from Government, such as grants for purchasing fishing boats.
He indicated that other schemes will be devised so as to facilitate the entry of businessmen in the fisheries sector with the objective of increasing production and to be less dependant on importation of fish products.
Speaking about aquaculture, Mr Maudhoo underlined that his Ministry has a few projects in the pipeline adding that these were discussed with Minister Padayachy.
The surveillance of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the recruitment of additional Officers for effective surveillance of the EEZ were also on the agenda, he added.
Minister Maudhoo concluded by recalling that, with the current worldwide situation, the Ministry of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping has the potential to have a great positive impact on our country’s development.
