Africa-Press – Mauritius. The blue economy sector and the role of society and women were the focus of two successive policy dialogue meetings, held this afternoon, in Port Louis, in the context of the presentation of Budget 2021-2022.

The Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr Renganaden Padayachy, thus met the Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping, Mr Sudheer Maudhoo, and the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Kalpana Devi Koonjoo-Shah.

Both Ministers shared their views and proposals with Dr Padayachy on the way forward with regards to the allocation of funds for project implementation in their sectors with the aim to promote development across the country.

In a statement following the meeting, Minister Maudhoo highlighted that given the present economic situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, representations have been made in particular for the fishermen community.

Discussions also focused on projects for aquaculture and off-lagoon aquaculture, he shared. The Finance Minister has been receptive to the proposals which are expected to set the base to enable the blue economy become a pillar of our country, he added.

Gender Equality and Family Welfare
As for Minister Koonjoo-Shah, she stated that talks were positive and fruitful as the Finance Minister understands the role of society and women in the process of reviving the economy post-COVID-19.

Proposals made emphasise the importance of support needed to enhance protection services for women in distress and children who are abused and ill-treated, she pointed out.
