Africa-Press – Mauritius. Governance is more than just complying with laws, regulations, standards, and codes: it also aims to nurturing a culture of good practice” was the gist of the message of the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, yesterday, at the graduation ceremony of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, Mauritius Branch, held at the Paul Octave Wiéhé Auditorium in Réduit.
The President of the Corporate Governance Institute for the United Kingdom and Ireland, Mrs Victoria Penrice, and other personalities were also present at the event.
President of the Republic pointed out that Chartered Secretaries and Administrators hold a position of immense responsibility in the corporate world, serving as the pillars of governance and administration, and contributing to the business community and the country’s progress.
He thus told new graduates that their prime duty is to protect the integrity and repute of the country. The growing need for qualified professionals was also underlined by Mr Roopun as Mauritius seeks to position itself as an International Financial hub into mainland Africa.
“In the same vein, the role of company secretaries shall become crucial in shaping the future of Mauritius as an attractive destination for financial services and global business operations,” he stated.
Moreover, the President brought to the fore the broader role of Company Secretaries, namely in monitoring changes in law and regulations that affect the company’s operations; ensuring that the company complies with relevant legislation, such as Company Law, Securities regulations, data protection and anti-corruption; and in developing and implementing risk management strategies within the organisation.
President Roopun, hence, appealed to the graduates to get engaged in the assimilation and internalisation of their recently acquired knowledge. He underscored that learning is a never-ending process and called on the Chartered Secretaries and Administrators to always engage in continuous learning and professional development in order to adapt to the dynamic and complex corporate landscape.
On this note, the President mentioned the number of challenges faced by Company Secretaries in a dramatically changing working environment such as the ever-evolving regulatory landscape and the use of technology and artificial intelligence to carry out the responsibilities and functions of Company Secretaries. He urged for the power of artificial intelligence and technology to be harnessed in a sustainable and responsible manner.
