Prevention and early detection, key in tackling non-communicable diseases, affirms Health Minister

Africa-Press – Mauritius. Prevention and early detection approaches are critical in reducing the risks of non-communicable diseases and associated morbidity and mortality while mitigating the health costs related to responding to these diseases at a more severe stage.

This was the gist of the message delivered by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, at the launch of a Health Week/Health Promotion Campaign initiative, this morning, in Ebène.

The event, scheduled from 25 to 29 September 2023, is organised by Orange Business Services Mauritius in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and targets some 1,500 employees of Orange Business.

In his speech for the occasion, Dr Jagutpal deplored the high prevalence of NCDs in the country. It is noted that NCDs such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases account for 80% of the total disease burden and for 85 % of mortality.

“Hence, the Health Promotion Unit is carrying out an NCD and Health Promotion Campaign around the island to raise awareness on preventive measures against NCDs,” stated the Minister.

The Health Minister highlighted Government’s commitment to continuously enhance the health system and provide best quality health care for the population.

He also underlined the role of all citizens in alleviating the burden of NCDs by seizing the opportunity of the Health Campaign to review their lifestyle and avail of the free screening facilities for early detection and prompt treatment of NCDs, if necessary.

Thus, Dr Jagutpal welcomed the steps taken by Orange Business Services Mauritius to care for the health of its employees. The Minister also urged the employees to avail of the health week to screen for NCDs and seek the required guidance to make a positive health change in their lifestyle.

He underscored the essential aspects of a healthy lifestyle which included the consumption of a balanced diet, the regular practice of physical activities and avoiding smoking and alcohol abuse. Several activities will be taking place over the week as part of the health promotion initiative.

These comprise screening services for diabetes, hypertension, vision and obesity; counselling and education on risk factors of NCDs; breast and cervical cancer screening; Artificial Intelligence electrocardiography test; bioelectrical impedance analysis; exhibition on healthy food model; and counselling by nutritionists on healthy eating habits, among others.
