Africa-Press – Mauritius. Government has put sports and physical activity high on its agenda. It is in this endeavour that the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, inaugurated, this afternoon, the Residence Vignol Sub Hall and Green Space, located at Circonstance, St Pierre.

The Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun, Member of Parliament, Mr Yogida Sawmynaden, and several other personalities were present.

In his address, Prime Minister Jugnauth rejoiced that the inhabitants of the region will be able to avail of the amenities and facilities at the new Sub Hall.

The Sub Hall, he indicated, comprises a gym, a recreational area with indoor games, a pétanque court, a kids corner, a health track as well as a green space.

Government, he underpinned, is trying its best to respond to the needs of the population in various regions adding that several infrastructural projects are in the pipeline despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Mauritius, he observed, is among the four top countries to have provided so many incentives and support to the citizens during this difficult time. The aim, he added, is to provide assistance and relief to the population while enhancing their quality of life.

Government is subsidising a number of products to ensure that citizens do not suffer from inflation and high prices, he stated. Reiterating Government’s priority to enhancing the welfare of each citizen, the Prime Minister stated that the health of the population remains one of his main concerns.

He cautioned about alarming figures concerning non-communicable diseases and urged each and every one to be more conscious of their eating habits and to participate in various sporting activities.

On this note, he exhorted the youth to engage more in social and healthy activities and to abstain from smoking, drinking and taking drugs. As regards vaccines, the Prime Minister cautioned the public against the COVID-19 pandemic while advising that it is important and safer to get vaccinated with a second booster dose.

Speaking on the Sub Hall, he indicated that it will provide a clean environment and a healthy outdoor activity space for the inhabitants with the objective of promoting a healthy lifestyle through regular physical activity in a green space and in the open air for the inhabitants of the region, including the youths and the elderly.

Prime Minister Jugnauth encouraged the inhabitants to fully benefit from this facility and to regularly practice a physical activity as part of their routine life.

For her part, VPM Dookun-Luchoomun reiterated Government’s objective to improve the quality of life of citizens and promote their well-being by putting at their disposal necessary infrastructure, sports equipment, and giving them access to leisure activities.

As for Mr Sawmynaden, he lauded the determination and commitment of the District Council of Moka for encouraging such infrastructural projects geared towards enhancing the social life of the inhabitants.
