The Chinese community in Mauritius has played a key role in consolidating the friendly ties between Mauritius and the People’s Republic of China on the cultural and economic front, stated the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, yesterday at the Hua Lien Club in Trianon.
He was speaking at a Feast of Good Fortune organised by the United Chinese Association on the occasion of the Chinese New Year 2023 which will be celebrated on Sunday 22 January.
The spouse of the Prime Minister, Mrs Kobita Jugnauth, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Mauritius, Mr Liying Zhu, the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Steven Obeegadoo, several Ministers and eminent personalities, were present at the event.
Prime Minister Jugnauth indicated that the progress and sustained economic growth of a country relies mainly on peace which is a key element for development.
He highlighted that values such as unity, fraternity and mutual respect should be highly encouraged among the population for a prosperous and peaceful nation, he said.
He spoke of the arrival of the first Chinese immigrants some 250 years back during the Dutch period while emphasising that the impact of Chinese migration in Mauritius has been remarkable on the economic and cultural level.
The Chinese diaspora, he observed, has been able to transmit their heritage from generations to generations and has had a huge contribution in shaping the cultural landscape of Mauritius. He underlined the concerted efforts of various Associations to strengthen the links and ties between the countries.
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for their continuous support and consideration to Mauritius in the implementation of numerous projects and initiatives.
With regard to the relaunch of activities across various sectors, Prime Minister Jugnauth is hopeful that the new year will bring hope, peace and success on the national front.
Despite the challenges, he pointed out that economic operators have demonstrated resilience and determination to maximise on new opportunities. Speaking on the Covid-19 pandemic, he appealed to the citizens to remain on alert and continue to take precautions.
“We have to remain positive and brave all challenges to overcome the crisis and ensure prosperity for the nation”, he said.
For his part, Ambassador Liying indicated that year 2022 has been an important year as it marked the 50th anniversary of Mauritius and China diplomatic relations.
On this note, he reiterated his commitment to further reinforce the bilateral ties that Mauritius and China have nurtured over the past 50 years through strong collaboration and partnership.
