Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister for Rodrigues, Outer Islands and Territorial Integrity, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, was at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Belle Rose, this afternoon, to sign the book of condolences for the death of Chinese former President, Mr Jiang Zemin.
The Prime Minister was welcomed by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Liying Zhu.
Earlier, the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Prithvirajsing Roopun, also paid his respects to the memory of the late Chinese President, who passed away in Shanghai on 30 November 2022, at the age of 96.
The announcement of the death of the former Communist Party Chief was made by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China, the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and the Central Military Commissions of the Communist Party of China and the People’s Republic of China.
Mr Jiang Zemin was deemed an outstanding leader enjoying high prestige and acknowledged by the whole Party, the entire military and the Chinese people of all ethnic groups.
He was known as a great Marxist, a great proletarian revolutionary, statesman, military strategist and diplomat, a long-tested communist fighter, and an outstanding leader of the great cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
Mr Jiang Zemin was elected Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee in 1989, and General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee at the fourth plenary session of the 13th Communist Party of China Central Committee.
In the same year, the fifth plenary session of the 13th Communist Party of China Central Committee decided on Mr Jiang Zemin serving as chairman of the Central Military Commissions of the Communist Party of China.
In 1990, Jiang was elected Chairman of the Central Military Commissions of the People’s Republic of China at the third session of the 7th National People’s Congress.
He became the President of the People’s Republic of China in 1993. His presidency lasted up to 2003. During his ten-year tenure, Mr Jiang Zemin guided China’s rise to global economic power.
He retired as the Communist Party Chief in 2002, stepped down as President in 2003, and relinquished his seat as Chairman of the party’s Central Military Commission the following year.
The State Funeral of Mr Jiang Zemin will be held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday 06 December 2022, according to the Chinese state media.
