Africa-Press – Mauritius. After attending COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth traveled to London where he continued his mission. There were many diplomatic and investment prospecting meetings, among others.
The Prime Minister has participated in meetings sponsored by the Economic Development Board (EDB) with a view to promoting Mauritius as a competitive and attractive business, finance and production center for UK businesses.
On Friday November 5th, Mr. Pravind Jugnauth spoke with the Managing Director of Curzon Investments Ltd, Mr. Martin Brage. He expressed the interest of the investment company to set up in Mauritius, with, in particular, the development of a Smart City in Le Bouchon in the south of the island.
This vast project will require investments of around Rs 14.4 billion and will include, among other things, a 4-star hotel with 200 rooms, a shopping center, offices and sports facilities.
In addition to the Le Bouchon Smart City project, the Curzon group wants to explore opportunities in tourism, green energies, smart technologies and research and development.
The Prime Minister also had discussions with Mr. Denis Sverdlov, the founder and Managing Director of Arrival Ltd, manufacturer of electric vehicles. He spoke of his company’s intention to set up a micro-factory in Mauritius to produce vehicles.
The Prime Minister recalled, in this regard, the government’s policy to encourage the use of electric cars and Mauritius’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030.
Mr. Pravind Jugnauth also discussed economic cooperation at UK government level. In Glasgow, he had discussions with Ms. Elizabeth Truss, the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. Mauritius is seeking input from Great Britain in the areas of renewable energy, cybersecurity, waste treatment and pharmaceuticals.
Mauritius and Great Britain also want to further develop their trade. Mauritius is also counting on the support of Great Britain to modernize its financial center.
The EDB, for its part, organized the Women in Trade Forum on November 4 in London. This forum aimed to connect Mauritian women entrepreneurs to the SheTrades platform so that they can access international markets.
The SheTrades platform is an initiative of the International Trade Center (ITC) development agency and aims to network three million women entrepreneurs around the world.
The Prime Minister’s wife, Ms. Kobita Jugnauth, addressed the Women in Trade Forum in her capacity as an ambassador for SheTrades. She emphasized the importance of supporting women entrepreneurs in the development of foreign markets, hence the relevance of the SheTrades platform.
The Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. Mr. Renganaden Padayachy, also participated in this event.
The Chagos dossier is also on the Prime Minister’s agenda as part of this trip to the United Kingdom. The issue was discussed between Mr Pravind Jugnauth and his British counterpart, Mr Boris Johnson, and also with Ms Elizabeth Truss in Glasgow.
In London, the Prime Minister had a working session with Professor Phillipe Sands, QC, of Matrix Chambers, the law firm that represents the State of Mauritius in legal actions to claim sovereignty over the archipelago.
