Africa-Press – Mauritius. A cheque to the tune of Rs 700,000 for the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund in a bid to support needy citizens affected by the COVID-19 pandemic was presented, this afternoon, by the Association of District Councils (ADC) to the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, during a ceremony held at the New Treasury Building, in Port-Louis.
In a statement following the event, the president of the ADC and president of the Moka District Council, Mr Sudhir Soonarane, highlighted that the Association of District Councils brings together under one roof the seven district councils of Mauritius.
The ADC, he remarked, has a fund which is currently not being used due to the situation elicited by the pandemic, and the Government is already doing a laudable work in supporting citizens in need. Therefore, the ADC has decided to donate some funds to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund to further assist Mauritians, he emphasised.
In addition, Mr Soonarane expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Government for allocating the necessary financial resources to all local authorities for the development of projects even during these present dire times.
Speaking about activities undertaken by the local authorities to handle the impact of the COVID-19, he recalled that a lot of prevention initiatives were carried out across all villages in Mauritius and these comprised sensitisation among inhabitants on social distancing and the need to abide by sanitary protocols in place.
