Africa-Press – Mauritius. The 2025 Mauritian municipal elections saw a decisive victory for the Parti Travailliste (PTR), securing 54 seats (34 men, 20 women) within the Alliance du Changement coalition, notably in Port Louis, Curepipe, and Vacoas-Phoenix.
The Mouvement Militant Mauricien (MMM) secured 51 seats (30 men, 21 women), also part of the Alliance. The Nouveaux Démocrates won 5 seats (3 men, 2 women), with representation in Curepipe and Vacoas-Phoenix.
Rezistans ek Alternativ, another member of the Alliance, made significant gains with 7 seats (5 men, 2 women) across the five municipalities. The Reform Party and En Avant Moris each won one seat, in Vacoas and Beau-Bassin respectively.
A notable result was the independent candidate who won a seat in Port-Louis’ ward 8, securing 1501 votes, surpassing three Alliance du Changement candidates. This underscores the continued presence of independent candidates able to contest and win seats within heavily contested municipal elections.
The results demonstrate the strong performance of the Alliance du Changement coalition, while also highlighting the success of individual independent candidates.
The distribution of seats shows a clear dominance by the PTR and MMM, but with significant representation from smaller parties, indicating a varied political landscape. The results point towards a politically diverse set of city councils.
