Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, was conferred, today, the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour (Grand Croix de la Légion d’Honneur), France’s highest civilian and military honour, by the President of the Republic of France, Mr Emmanuel Macron, during a ceremony held at the State House in Réduit. The French President is currently on a two-day Official Visit in Mauritius.

On his part, President Macron was conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (G.C.S.K.), the highest civilian distinction of Mauritius, by the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Dharam Gokhool.

President Macron also bestowed the award of Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour on President Gokhool.

The award ceremony was preceded by a courtesy call by the French President on his Mauritian counterpart, reaffirming the longstanding partnership and friendship between Mauritius and France.

Legion of Honour

The Legion of Honour, the premier order of the French Republic, is the highest award given for outstanding service to France, regardless of the social status or the nationality of the recipients.

Napoléon Bonaparte, First Consul of the First Republic, first established the French Legion of Honour in 1802.

This distinction has five ranks – Knight (Chevaliers), Officers, Commanders, Grand Officers and Grand Crosses. The Grand Officers and the Grand Crosses are known as the Dignitaries of the Order.
