Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, paid tribute, to the Father of the Nation, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR), yesterday afternoon during a wreath-laying ceremony held at the SSR Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses.
The ceremony, held in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the passing away of SSR, was attended by Ministers, Junior Ministers, Members of the National Assembly, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, as well as other eminent personalities.
Life and Legacy of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam
Born in 1900, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (1900–1985) is revered as the Father of the Nation for his central role in the struggle for independence and the building of modern Mauritius. Following his studies in medicine in London, he returned to Mauritius to dedicate his life to public service and national development.
Between 1940 and 1953, SSR held several key local political offices, including those of Municipal Councillor and Mayor of Port Louis. As the country progressed towards independence, he assumed major responsibilities within the colonial administration, serving as Secretary of the Treasury, Minister of Finance and Chief Minister. In 1965, he became Premier and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his unwavering commitment and more than three decades of dedicated public service to the Mauritian nation.
As leader of the Independence Party, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam led Mauritius to independence in March 1968 and became the country’s first Prime Minister. He remained in office until June 1982. During his tenure, Mauritius secured membership in major international organisations, including the United Nations and the Organisation of African Unity, strengthening the country’s presence on the global stage. In 1976, SSR served as Chairman of the Organisation of African Unity, further highlighting his leadership and influence at continental level.
In December 1983, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam was appointed Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of Mauritius, serving as the representative of Queen Elizabeth II. A firm advocate of democracy, social justice, and national unity, he laid the foundations of modern Mauritius through his commitment to education, healthcare, and social welfare. His vision and values continue to guide the nation, leaving behind an enduring legacy of unity, resilience and service to the people.
