Africa-Press – Mauritius. Ramotswa District Councillors gave a standing ovation during a full council session to the Kagiso Senior Secondary School robotics team after an inspiring performance at the 2023 For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Global Challenge held in Singapore.

The team scooped the first position in Africa and became number 26 out of the more than 190 countries that took part in the closely contested global event.

The FIRST Global Challenge is an Olympic-style, international robotics competition that takes place in a different country each year. Each nation is invited to send a team to build and programme a robot to compete.

This year’s theme focused on the role of hydrogen in the planet’s renewable energy and reduced carbon future. Ramotswa District Council (RDC) Chairperson Mr Zaahid Jalal extended heartfelt gratitude to the team and their mentors Mr Chidzani Matebu and Ms Gaone Karabo for a job well done.

“This Competition’s mission is to inspire leadership and innovation in youth from all nations by empowering them through education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM education).

It also ensures that secondary school students collaborate to solve planet earth problems in order to improve the quality of life for all such as, clean water, clean energy and waste disposal in a safe manner,” said Mr Jalal.

Mr Matebu, a computer studies teacher at Kagiso Senior Secondary School, said they were striving to bring together youth from diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences to inspire and motivate them to become leaders and innovators of the future.

He said the FIRST Global challenge encouraged leaners to address present global challenges while staying current with cutting edge technologies. Mr Matebu said in Singapore the teams were expected to engage in renewable energy including hydrogen technologies and then develop their own innovative solutions within their communities and nations to create a cleaner energy future.

The Kagiso robotic team was established in 2017 and has taken part in the past global challenges held in the US, Mexico, Dubai, Switzerland and lately Singapore.
