Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Ministry of Land Transport and Light Rail organised an official ceremony, yesterday in Baie du Cap, to proceed to the handing over of the renovated Baie du Cap Bus Terminal to the Savanne District Council.
Other activities were also held on this occasion, namely: a launching ceremony for the fixing of Belisha Flashing Beacons around the island; and the launching of a sensitisation campaign on Drug Driving.
The Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), Mr Nand Prakash Ramchurrun, the Member of Parliament, Mrs Marie Sandra Monia Mayotte, as well as other personalities were present at the events.
In his address, Minister Ganoo highlighted that the inauguration of this traffic centre in Baie du Cap coincides with its handing over to the Savanne District Council.
He underlined that the renovated bus terminal will now be able to cater for the increasing number of buses operating in the region and offer a better service to the inhabitants of Baie du Cap.
This project to the tune of some Rs 15 million, he emphasised, comprises of, among others, three smart bus shelters, a taxi stand, lighting facilities, elevated footpaths for pedestrians, and toilets.
He added that semi-low floor buses can also be accommodated at the renovated bus terminal, and that a station master will be posted in Baie du Cap to ensure that buses depart on time.
Speaking about the Belisha Flashing Beacons, Minister Ganoo stressed that these will provide more safety to pedestrians crossing the road as drivers will be able to spot them from afar even at night. These beacons, he stated, will be installed along some 20 zebra crossings around the island, especially on roads with dense traffic.
The Minister also seized this opportunity to recall that the Metro Express project as well as other projects undertaken by Government aim at further developing the country and ensure the well-being of the whole population.
He further spoke about the negative effects of climate change on the environment and recalled that some Rs 2 billion have been earmarked in the last budget for the acquisition of 200 electric buses so as to lower the country’s carbon footprint.
With regards to the sensitisation campaign on Drug Driving, Minister Ganoo underlined that this initiative is being carried out with the support of the Prime Minister’s Office.
He added that testing kits have been provided to the Mauritius Police Force so as to carry out random tests around the island in a bid to better protect road users.
As for PPS Ramchurrun, he commended the Ministry of Land Transport and Light Rail, as well as relevant stakeholders, for the works carried out to complete the Baie du Cap Bus Terminal.
He also reminded that funds have already been earmarked in the last budget so as to carry out other infrastructural projects in the region. For her part, Mrs Mayotte observed that the bus terminal bears testimony to infrastructural works being undertaken in the region in a bid to enhance the inhabitants’ well-being. These works, she added, are geared towards progress and development.
