Representatives of Dealers in Imported Vehicles Association discuss their proposals with the Finance Minister

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Dr. Renganaden Padayachy, met representatives of the Dealers in Imported Vehicles Association, today in Port-Louis.

The meeting was held in the context of the ongoing Pre-Budget consultations 2022-2023. In a statement after the meeting, the President of the Dealers in Imported Vehicles Association, Mr.

Zaid Ameer, indicated that the Finance Minister has taken their proposals into consideration and will come up with appropriate measures amid the difficult socio-economic situation following the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war.

He spoke of a decrease in the manufacturing and sale of cars on the international front adding that the availability of cars in Mauritius will be relatively lower in the coming months.

As for the period of January to March 2022, he pointed out, only 180 vehicles were imported instead of 2000. He attributed the fall to a subsequent appreciation of foreign currency and a drastic increase of freight charges from 1200 USD to 6000 USD per container.

Among the main proposals are: payment of one patent instead of two; review of the age of imported vehicles; consideration of an affidavit for purchase of vehicles; and the setting up of a maritime company in Mauritius.
