Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Round Table focused on Goal 1 COP 26 -Ensuring global net zero by mid-century and keeping 1.5 degrees within reach, opened this morning in Port-Louis, in the presence of the Minister of Energy and Public Services, Mr.
Georges Pierre Lesjongard, the Minister for the Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr. Kavydass Ramano, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Ms. Amanda Serumaga, and the High Deputy Commissioner of the United Kingdom, Mrs. Sally Harrison, among others.
This initiative of the Ministry of Energy and Public Services and the Mauritius Renewable Energy Agency (MARENA), aims to foster public and private dialogue in light of the Government’s commitment to an inclusive energy transition.
In his opening remarks, Minister Lesjongard called for a strengthened partnership between stakeholders to accelerate action to address the climate change crisis and the challenges of the energy transition, adding that the British High Commission and UNDP have been very helpful.

Reducing reliance on fossil fuels, raising the target in the energy mix from 40% to 60% and phasing out coal altogether by 2030 will help ensure the transition to a low-carbon economy, he said.
Minister Ramano, for his part, expressed his gratitude to the British High Commissioner and UNDP for their continued support to Mauritius in the implementation of the sustainable development agenda.
He highlighted that the Fourth National Communication and the Environmental Master Plan are underway, which point to the ecological transition by 2030. As for Ms. Serumaga, she highlighted the pressing need for a rapid expansion of renewable energy production in Mauritius.
UNDP, he added, will continue to provide support to the Government that has undertaken several initiatives, such as the 10-year Electric Vehicle Integration Roadmap, the National Battery Plan and the National Biomass Framework with a view to developing the green energy industry.

Harrison affirmed that the COP26 summit was a great opportunity for countries to work together and strengthen collaboration to address the main global challenges.
