Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is convening the Council of Ministers meeting in Lilongwe, Republic of Malawi, kicked off today to discuss issues aimed at promoting and deepening regional integration, cooperation and economic development.
The two-day meeting is focusing on the theme Bolstering Productive Capacities in the face of COVID-19 pandemic for inclusive, sustainable, economic and industrial transformation.
In this context, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, intervened virtually, today, in the Council Meeting.
Minister Ganoo expressed gratitude to the SADC Secretariat for the assistance extended to Mauritius in the implementation of the national Food Fortification Programme.
He welcomed the initiative of complementing wheat with micro nutrients adding that the first fortified samples will be available by January 2023. This, he stated, will help in fighting iron deficiency among the adolescent population.
Mr Ganoo also informed that Mauritius would host the third Ministerial Conference on Maritime Security organised by Mauritius and the Indian Ocean Commission in June this year.
He invited the SADC Secretariat and SADC Member States to participate in the event. He highlighted that the main expected outcomes of the Ministerial Maritime Security Conference are in line with the SADC Maritime Security Strategy.
The Minister also remarked that the efforts of the SADC Secretariat in coordinating regional response to fight the COVID-19 pandemic deserves due consideration and appreciation.
