Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Secretary General of the World Customs Organisation (WCO), Dr Kunio Mikuriya, met the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, yesterday, in Port-Louis.

In a statement after the meeting, Dr Kunio Mikuriya said that it is WCO’s first in-person meeting in Mauritius adding that it is a good time to start human networking.

He indicated that he had an excellent discussion with Minister Ganoo, during which they identified a regional Strategic Plan as well as the way forward for regional integration in line with this vision.

The Secretary General further stated that the Minister lays a lot of emphasis on the important role of customs for regional integration through the connectivity at borders.

He further expressed appreciation as regards the existing relations between the WCO and Mauritius, and said that the WCO would like to see Mauritius’ contribution to Africa and other international organisations.

When it comes to capacity building in the African region, we often see Mauritius as a showcase, he added. He pointed out that the multilingual WCO Regional Training Centre is located in Mauritius, which is beneficial for both parties.

Dr Kunio Mikuriya recalled that Mauritius benefits from getting the most advanced practices from WCO, and in turn provides capacity-building assistance to neighboring countries so that they can have connectivity based on harmonised practices.

Besides, he underlined the importance of WCO’s and Mauritius’ cooperation in the context of Africa and in helping to improve business environment and the global economy. Moreover, Dr Kunio Mikuriya informed that they both agreed to continue to improve the good cooperation between Mauritius and the WCO.
