Africa-Press – Mauritius. A clean up and sensitisation campaign was held on 21 January 2023 in flood prone areas in the region of Plaine Magnien, in the presence of the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram.
The Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint, as well as other personalities and relevant stakeholders were also present.
In a statement, Minister Hurreeram highlighted that, on this occasion, concerned authorities were able to take stock of the progress of works regarding the construction of new drains, the clearing of existing ones, and the dredging and cleaning of rivers.
It was also an opportunity to assess the impact of the recent heavy rainfall in the region; determine the efficiency of the existing infrastructure; and come up with solutions regarding blocked drains and flooding issues in the region, he pointed out.
The Minister nonetheless deplored that some citizens are still behaving irresponsibly by dumping waste such as, for instance, used mattresses, washing machines and refrigerators in rivers and drains.
He thus seized this opportunity to urge the population to act more responsibly and collaborate with the authorities in keeping drains and rivers, as well as the environment in general, clean.
