In the context of the Commission de la Jeunesse et des Sports de l’Océan Indien (CJSOI) Games, the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Stephan Toussaint, and the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram, effected a site visit, today, at Blue Bay Beach, to take stock of the progress of works as regards the construction of a beach handball arena.
In a statement, the Sports Minister expressed his satisfaction concerning the advancement of the project, which comprises a beach handball arena of 100m x 60 m, an administrative block, 300 stands for spectators, restrooms and a jogging track.
“The arena,” he said, “will be used for beach handball competition for the CJSOI Games which will be held from 04 to 11 December as well as for other activities including beach football, beach wrestling, beach tennis, and beach volley.
“The project,” he added, “is estimated at around Rs 17 million and is expected to be completed by end of October.
” “The athletes will be able to practise beforehand the competition and the arena will be open to the public on a booking system in January 2023,” he stated.
Minister Toussaint indicated that the jogging track had been put at the disposal of the inhabitants in a bid to promote a sporting culture and encourage them to practise regular physical exercises.
As regards the CJSOI Games, he pointed out that the Ministry, in collaboration with other stakeholders, were working hand in hand to ensure that all arrangements and preparations were going on smoothly.
