Africa-Press – Mauritius. Creatives have been implored to leverage on the power of social media and use it to grow their brands. Speaking at a panel discussion at the Batho Fashion Week in Kasane on Saturday, owner of Nora Cosmetics Norah Mc Aslin said social media was an important tool that had propelled many businesses to greater heights.
She called on aspiring entrepreneurs to use it as a research and marketing tool. The cosmetologist said it was imperative for creatives to post content aimed at building and inspiring others on digital platforms.
She said many people had been discovered through social media. However, Mc Aslin warned that misuse of social media could ruin one’s career as many brands did not want to associate with people who posted negative and vile content.
Giving her insight on the topic, Building a sustainable fashion brand: creating a fashion business that’s both profitable and ethical Mc Aslin highlighted that in order to achieve sustainability in business one needed to be proactive and understand the business goals.
She said a business needed a relentless attitude because challenges were bound to arise in any setup, citing COVID-19 outbreak as an example. Mc Aslin said the beauty and cosmetics industry was very broad and untapped into in Botswana hence she encouraged many to find a niche in the sector.
Bokang Proctor of Collections by Bk Proctor said good character was key in running a successful business. He highlighted that since inception of the clothing brand in 2018 their aim had been to grow and become a successful brand that would crash the perception that Batswana failures in running businesses.
“Our team drives the brand and understands the vision which is why we set up a solid business structure so that we remain a sustainable brand.
’’ Proctor said the fashion industry hired many people creating many value chains. He advised entrepreneurs to work hard and maintain good character on digital spaces.
Namibian entrepreneur and reality TV star Luis Munana warned aspiring entrepreneurs and creative to desist from posting negative and hurtful remarks on social media as this could ruin their chances of striking deals with big brands.
“Brands don’t want to align themselves with controversial people so be conscious of what you put out into the world to see because you never know who is going through your social media page.
Munana stated that it was important for one to be knowledgeable in order to grow their brand, adding that the Windhoek Fashion Week in Namibia opened doors for many young artists as they invited big retailers and corporate who scout personalities at the show. He further invited Nora Cosmetics and Bk Proctor to be part of the upcoming Windhoek Fashion show this year.
