The Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs. Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra, expressed confidence in the youth’s role in advancing socio-economic development in the Indian Ocean region during a press conference. The event was part of the Parlement Francophone Régional des Jeunes de l’Indianoceanie, which gathered young representatives from five member states to discuss democracy and development.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra, reiterated her confidence in the youth’s ability to safeguard and contribute to the socio-economic advancement of the Indian Ocean region. She was speaking at a press conference held, yesterday in Port Louis, in the context of the Parlement Francophone Régional des Jeunes de l’Indianoceanie (PFRJIO).

The PFRJIO is an initiative of the Assemblée Parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF) in collaboration with the Mauritius National Assembly and the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC). It brings together 30 young people from five member States namely the Union of the Comoros, France/Réunion Island, the Republic of Madagascar, the Republic of Mauritius and the Republic of Seychelles.

Also present at the press conference were the head of the APF delegation, Mrs Amélia Lakafri, along with PFRJIO members, Mr Khamlichi Florian Alexandre Hachim, and Ms Néné Mariam Kane.

During the press conference, Mrs Aumeeruddy-Cziffra indicated that the event which took place from 8 to 10 December provided a unique platform for the youth to express their perspectives on the importance of promoting development and democracy in the Indian Ocean region.

The contributions of the youth, she stated, will be highly beneficial and influential in shaping regional policies and provide solutions to the region’s challenges.

As for Mrs Lakafri, she underlined that the PFRJIO enabled young people in the region to express themselves with a unified voice, to influence national, regional and international decisions impacting their future, while promoting and strengthening their active participation in democracy.

Mr Hachim and Ms Kane spoke of the resolutions taken during the session of the PFRJIO namely sustainable tourism and socio-professional inclusion of youth. They both expressed gratitude to the APF, the Mauritius National Assembly, and the IOC for supporting and integrating the youth in decision making and in promoting democracy.

The Indian Ocean region has a rich history of cultural exchange and collaboration among its island nations. Initiatives like the Parlement Francophone Régional des Jeunes de l’Indianoceanie aim to empower youth by providing platforms for dialogue and participation in governance. This engagement is crucial for addressing regional challenges and fostering a sense of community among the youth of these diverse nations.
