Speeches and alliances…

Africa-Press – Mauritius. All eyes were on the various meetings on May 1 this week, and in particular on that of the MSM which gathered its supporters in Vacoas. It is difficult to gauge the success or otherwise of this rally because the other traditional parties preferred not to organize rallies to commemorate May Day.

It is clear that the MSM meeting was not up to the political challenge for the government party, which had to make a show of force. But it is also clear that the crowd present was not negligible at all.

And, without any element of comparison with other meetings, it is impossible to comment on the current trends of the electorate, since there was no battle of the crowds. But even if this battle of the mobs had taken place, we would not have had a real indicator.

Mauritian political culture is changing and objective indicators, such as crowds at rallies, no longer mean much, especially as social media allows people to follow rallies and listen to speeches from the comfort of their homes.

House. Moreover, it had been clear for some time that the PTr, MMM and PMSD were not going to form a united front for a May Day rally. The internal negotiations are, it seems, at an impasse, which means that the various leaders could not appear together for a meeting if they were not certain that the alliance was going to be concluded.
. They thus played the safety card, going only to lay wreaths.

This position was politically rational, but they still made the mistake of announcing a joint meeting, and the fact that it did not take place represents a major about-face for them, even if we hears another talk about it here and there.

There remains the tenor of the speeches. . . We see that the opposition parties are sticking to their position of presenting themselves as the saviors of the country, something whose credibility is as fragile as the alliance negotiations themselves.

Opposite, the speeches of the MSM will have shone by one thing only: the fact that Pravind Jugnauth remained silent on the leader of the PMSD, while he was virulent towards Navin Ramgoolam and Paul Bérenger.
