Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Gathering of Athletes and a Ceremony of Award for Shield of Excellence, organised by the Trust Fund for Excellence in Sports, were held on Saturday 17 December 2022, at Pointe Jérôme Youth Training Centre.
The Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Jean Christophe Stephan Toussaint, and other dignitaries graced the event. The Sports Minister remitted the Shield for Excellence to badminton player Julien Paul, in the male category, and to judoka Christianne Legentil, in the female category.
Each athlete was also awarded a cash prize of Rs 25,000. In his address on the occasion, Minister Toussaint expressed satisfaction as regards the dedication and good performance demonstrated by local athletes during the various sports events held throughout the year.
He encouraged them to keep up the spirit of enthusiasm and their passion for sports while reassuring them of his unflinching commitment to support them in all activities aimed at yielding better performances.
“Government,” he said, “is catering for various platforms and facilities in order for local athletes to hone their capabilities and attain higher ambitions.
As regards the award of the ‘Shield for Excellence’, the Minister emphasised that it was an initiative geared towards encouraging local athletes to continuously improve their performance by rewarding those who achieved excellence in their respective sports field as well as in their studies.
Moreover, Mr Toussaint congratulated the Mauritian Team for their outstanding performance during the Commission de la Jeunesse et des Sports de l’Océan Indien Games 2022 and the Commonwealth Games 2022.
Mr Stephan Toussaint also urged all Mauritian athletes to avail of all the facilities being offered by the Ministry to prepare themselves for major upcoming sports events, including the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games, the Jeux de la Francophonie and the 2023 African Games.
