Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Made in Moris label and the Attitude Group, in collaboration with the Association des Hôteliers et Restaurateurs de l’île Maurice (AHRIM) and the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA), organised, today, a talk on sustainable tourism at Sunrise Attitude Hotel in Belle Mare.
Speakers were, among others, the President of the MTPA, Mr Nilen Vencadasmy, the Managing Director of the Tourism Authority, Mr Lindsay Morvan, the Chief Executive Officer of Attitude Group and President of AHRIM, Mr Jean-Michel Pitot, and the Managing Director of the Made in Moris label, Mrs Shirin Gunny.
Representatives of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) were also present on this occasion. Discussions focused around local products and added value to offers in the tourism sector; the support of the tourism industry to the local economy through collaboration with Non-Governmental Organisations, SMEs and the cultural industry; and the Made in Moris label.
Participants also had the opportunity to discover local experiences proposed by Sunrise Attitude Hotel, meet local talents, and taste the local flavours proposed to clients.
In his address, the President of the MTPA highlighted that the Authority works closely with stakeholders of the tourism sector and recalled the background work carried out so as to remove Mauritius from the Rouge écarlate list of France. He seized this opportunity to commend all those who were involved in the discussions.
Mr Vencadasmy pointed out that, nowadays, there is a shift in the demand of tour operators and, with the help of local actors of the tourism sector, a new experience is offered to tourists through hospitality, gastronomy, and in terms of local products available.
The aim of this shift, he stated, is to promote sustainable tourism and to better integrate SMEs in the tourism sector. Moreover, he underscored that a strategic plan has been designed so that the Made in Moris label can be integrated to the tourism sector.
He also recalled that Attitude Group is a pioneer in the promotion of sustainable tourism and encouraged every operator in the tourism sector to engage in same.
For his part, Mr Morvan commended the organisers for the talk and underlined that several operators have now introduced the concept of sustainable tourism.
He observed that the Tourism Authority has developed a series of measures and projects so as to encourage and accompany local operators. He also expressed hope that discussions will better enable stakeholders to move towards sustainable tourism.
As for Mr Pitot, he underlined that Attitude Group is certified with the Made in Moris label and as such, there is a need to promote local products and at the same time encourage SMEs to contribute to the development of sustainable tourism.
He stressed that the Sunrise Attitude Hotel, which was inaugurated a few months ago, will also contribute to achieving the objective of promoting sustainable tourism.
He also dwelt on the removal of Mauritius from the Rouge écarlate list and emphasised that this action will be beneficial to the local tourism industry.
