Africa-Press – Mauritius. The winners of the ‘Essay Competition 2021: Green Economy and the Impact of Climate Change’ received their prize, this morning, during an official ceremony at the Open University of Mauritius in Réduit.

The Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Kavydass Ramano, the Director General of Civil Service College, Mauritius, Professor Ramesh Durbarry, and other personalities were present at the prize giving ceremony.

The event was organised by the Civil Service College, Mauritius, in collaboration with the Partnership for Action on Green Economy, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, the Ministry of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology.

In his address, Minister Ramano highlighted this essay competition raised awareness among young people on climate change, which is a crucial subject, and gave them a better idea of the positive impacts of the green economy on the climate.

He observed that participants, in their essays, mentioned the possibilities for our country to increasingly use renewable technologies and the need to promote ecological practices, in particular through the planting of trees and the creation of green spaces.

The Minister underscored that these proposals from the participants are in line with Government’s agenda as the latter has mobilised substantial financial resources through the National Environment and Climate Change Fund, where nearly Rs 2 billion are made available each year to promote adaptation to the impacts of climate change.

These financial means, he stated, allow Government to invest in the construction of drains, the protection of coastal areas against erosion and disaster management. Furthermore, Minister Ramano commended organisers of this essay competition, which targeted young people in primary and secondary schools.

He expressed conviction that the younger generation needs to be supported so as to develop creativity that can be used to make our country more sustainable and greener.

Young people will moreover be able to help the planet through their actions and pass on the values that they themselves will have received, he added. It is recalled that participants were divided into three categories for the essay competition, namely: Grades 1 to 6; Grades 7 to 11; and Grades 12 and 13.
