Africa-Press – Mauritius. An official award ceremony was organised, this morning at the Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Tower in Ebène, whereby some 96 trainees received their National Certificate Level 4 for having successfully completed the Health Care Assisting (HCA) training programme.

This programme in HCA is an initiative of the HRDC in collaboration with the Private Clinics Association (PCA), and aims at skilling new entrants in the Health Sector under the National Training and Reskilling Scheme.

The Minister of Labour, Human Resource Development and Training, Mr Soodesh Satkam Callichurn; the Chairperson of the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC), Mr Gunness Balnock; the Director of the HRDC, Dr Raj Auckloo; the President of the PCA, Dr Dawood Oaris; as well as other eminent personalities were present on this occasion.

In his keynote address, Minister Callichurn highlighted that the HCA training programme was implemented following Government’s initiative in 2020 under the Economic Recovery Programme for the training and reskilling of unemployed individuals.

This training programme, he stated, demonstrates Government’s commitment to address the need for skilled and competent healthcare professionals while supporting unemployed people to gain skills which are in high demand.

The Minister underlined that, in today’s world, the importance of healthcare professionals, particularly Health Care Assistants, cannot be overstated. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown us the immense value of healthcare workers and the sacrifices they make to keep us safe and healthy, he pointed out.

Furthermore, Minister Callichurn remarked that there is a constant need for healthcare assistants to provide support and care to patients as the healthcare industry continues to expand due to several factors.

According to him, they include: an ageing population; advances in medical technology; and increased access to healthcare services. Healthcare assistance, he underscored, offers promising career advancement opportunities and numerous job prospects.

This path, however, not only requires skill and technical expertise but also demands a profound sense of humanity as well as compassion, empathy, and a deep sense of responsibility, he observed.

For his part, Dr Auckloo explained that the training programme was developed to respond to the health sector’s pressing need for trained and qualified personnel.

As for Dr Oaris, he indicated that the nursing staff are an important part of the healthcare team and it is crucial that they receive proper training so as to ensure that they are adequately skilled to service the private clinics and nursing homes as the demand is increasing with new upcoming clinics.
