Africa-Press – Mauritius. A Surgical Workshop, organised by the General Surgery Department of Victoria Hospital and Dr B. Cheong Hospital, was held on 14 October 2023 at Domaine Anna, Flic en Flac, in the presence of the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal.

In his address, Dr Jagutpal recalled that surgeries have greatly evolved over the years and that ground breaking procedures have redefined the landscape of healthcare particularly in the realm of minimally invasive surgeries.

He mentioned how the use of advanced technologies such as laparoscopes and robotic-assisted systems have enabled surgeons to perform intricate procedures with unprecedented precision and dexterity.

He also highlighted that the objective of Government is to decrease significantly the waiting list and waiting time as regards general surgeries. He indicated that in 2022, there were some 90 000 attendances in the General Surgery Department of Regional Hospitals and some 12 000 surgeries.

He stated that a total of 331 AV Fistula surgeries have been performed as well as 920 Lithotripsy procedures. There were 502 patients on the waiting list for General Surgeries for a waiting time of 5.1 weeks, 130 cases of AV Fistula with a waiting list of 5.4 weeks and 162 cases of Lithotripsy with an average waiting time of eight weeks. In 2023, much progress has been made in the management of AV Fistula as the waiting list has been brought to 1 to 2 weeks, he added.

Dr Jagutpal pointed out that in 2023, General Surgery Clinics have started at Goodlands and Triolet Mediclinics and at the Area Health Centre (AHC) of RivieĢ€re du Rempart for the region of SSRN Hospital while Victoria Hospital General Surgery Out Patient Departments are carried out at Yves Cantin Hospital, Route du Club, Floreal AHC, Forest Side CHC and Stanley CHC.

He observed that the General Surgery Department has continued innovating with the setting up of an Urology Department in Jeetoo Hospital last month. He pointed out that renal transplants have become a reality in Mauritius adding that since October 2022, 18 renal transplants have been performed at Victoria Hospital.

Furthermore, the Health Minister underlined that a Renal Transplant Unit is being set up at J. Nehru Hospital. It will be three-storeyed building with a built-up area of around 8 600 m2 comprising operation theatres, renal transplant wards, dialysis unit, outpatient unit and associated hospital facilities, he indicated.

He highlighted that up to now, renal transplants in Mauritius have been carried out on patients who have live-related donors only, that is from kidneys donated by close relatives of the patients.

He, however, stated that in a bid to save lives, Government will introduce organ transplant from nonrelated donors and also from cadaveric donors in the future.

The Surgical Workshop The workshop focused on conditions like endometriosis which affects 6 to 10 % of the female population. A presentation on Hepatic Endometriosis was also made.

This condition is rare and only a few cases have been documented in Mauritius. Intra abdominal hypertension, which is one of the major undiagnosed causes of increased mortality in the Intensive Care Unit and the High-Dependency Unit, was also on the agenda.

Participants also had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the latest advances in the treatment and surgery involved in the management of acute pancreatitis, rare hepatic cyst, and peritonitis.
