The Mauritius Sports Council (MSC) under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation will organise the TAFISA (Association for International Sport for All) World Walking Day 2023 on Sunday 01 October 2023 at various venues around the island to sensitise the population about the health benefits of practicing physical activities on a regular basis.

The Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology in collaboration with the MSC will also celebrate the event. In this context, the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Stephan Toussaint, participated on Monday 18 September 2023, in a walking activity at the France Boyer de la Giroday State Secondary School (SSS) in Plaine-Magnien.

The Minister also attended the walking event organised at the Emmanuel Anquetil SSS in Mahébourg on the same day. TAFISA World Walking Day Launched in 1991, the Association for International Sport for All (TAFISA) World Walking Day has provided a simple and fun way to be physically active and celebrate Sport for All against the global crisis of physical inactivity.

Over three decades, millions of people hailing from over 160 countries have made a habit of walking together on the first Sunday of October, turning it into “World Walking Day”.

The idea of TAFISA World Walking Day – 24 Hours Around the Globe, the most inclusive and accessible 24-hour relay around the world was born in 2020 when the world faced the COVID-19 pandemic in a bid to show that the Global Sport for All Movement could stand strong and united during trying times.

This year, TAFISA has as objectives to embark on a planet-wide relay that spans all 24 time zones, from East to West, to show how Sport for All can connect everyone.
