Africa-Press – Mauritius. The President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr Wavel Ramkalawan, accompanied by the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, met the Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, this afternoon, in Port-Louis.

The President of the Republic of Seychelles is currently in Mauritius for he has been invited as the Chief Guest to grace the activities being held in the context of the Commemoration of the 189th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery.

In a statement, Mr Wavel Ramkalawan expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Jugnauth for inviting him to join the national celebrations of the Commemoration of the 189th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery, which he added, is an important day for the country and the Mauritian population.

He highlighted that it is a privilege to grace this key event, and expressed appreciation for the warm welcome he has received from the population. The President also emphasised that both Seychelles and Mauritius share the common history of slavery pointing out that, he can identify with this symbolic celebration of the fight for dignity, liberty and one’s rights.

Furthermore, Mr Wavel Ramkalawan spoke of common challenges that Seychelles and Mauritius as Small Island Developing States, are facing and stressed that both countries will continue to work together to address these. Both countries, he observed, are leading examples for the African continent, in terms of governance and respect as well as in the economic field.

Besides, he pledged for continued solidarity between Seychelles and Mauritius and for common decisions to support each other, while reminding that the joint management of the Saya de Malha Bank by both parties is yet another leading example for the world.

President Ramkalawan also vouched to unflinchingly support Mauritius in its ongoing fight for the complete decolonisation of the Chagos Islands and renewed the will of Seychelles to strengthen its ties with Mauritius.
