Training focusses on countering Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse

Africa-Press – Mauritius. The Attorney General, Minister of Agro-Industry and Food Security, Mr Maneesh Gobin, met, this morning at the New Police Building in Abercrombie, the consultants of the Child Rescue Coalition, Messrs Richard Matthews and Paul Bayer, as well as other resource persons of a training programme organised by the European Union in collaboration with the Attorney General’s Office, within the framework of the GLACY+ and Octopus project. The training programme, focussing on the use of the Child Protection System for countering Online Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (OCSEA), spanned from 15 to 19 May 2023. It targeted some 20 law enforcement Officers, from the Mauritius Police Force and the Computer Emergency Response Team of Mauritius, involved in tracking and investigating OCSEA offences. Representatives of the Attorney General’s Office, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Judiciary also participated in the last training session. The four-day training aimed at increasing the knowledge and develop the skills of participants for the effective and successful use of the Child Protection System for investigations on OCSEA and offender management; enhancing the knowledge of participants, prosecutors, and judiciary representatives on the Child Protection System; and discussing the best possible solutions to apply in the local context pertaining to investigations on OCSEA and offender management. It is recalled that the identification of victims and prosecution of offenders is made difficult due to the transnational character often present in OCSEA offences. As such, the Council of Europe has supported countries across the world to tackle these issues by strengthening their legislation and the capacities of their criminal justice authorities.
