Under administration: why is Air Mauritius not receiving help from the MIC?

Air Mauritius (MK) is not only struck by the Covid-19 but is in bad shape following its calamitous management by nominees from different governments. Osman Mahomed, Labor MP, wonders: “Why isn’t the Mauritius Investment Corporation (MIC) using the money from the Bank of Mauritius to save hundreds of jobs? Why is nothing being done for this business that everyone agrees is vital to the most important sector of our economy, tourism, among others? ”

For a former director, it is likely that the government did not want to inject the money because the decision may have already been made to “liquidate” the company. This is why it is of the opinion that this file is being managed on a day-to-day basis. To him, it wouldn’t surprise him if we realized a bit late that the liquidation project would not work like a liquidation of another business. “With a liquidation and the eventual creation of another airline, it will be necessary to renegotiate and wait for your turn to have the precious landing rights,” he explains. “And if you want to lease more planes, who will lease to a new company? There are so many other factors to consider that are beyond the grasp of a simple administrator who has no aviation knowledge. ”

Could it be that the directors have employed specialist consultants? “You know as well as I do the damage the consultants have done to MK!” It is therefore possible that the government, through the MIC or not, will inject money after the Watershed meeting, he said.

Neither Sattar Hajee Abdoula nor the MIC came back to us for comment.
